I strongly encourage you to read the accompanying "Text"; these might be a little esoteric otherwise.
This is the first in another facet of the Culture suite that includes the bugs. It is looking at the same thing but from an economic perspective. This is a painting of a pirated DVD that holds 20 Disney movies on it, which can be bought at a market next to some guy selling the beads, and the beads cost more. Even still, both are a couple of bucks. That someone can misspell "Cartoon Selections" and yet be knowledgable enough to pirate a DVD, mass produce it, and then distribute it in third world countries, and that the guy that is selling them is making the same as a guy who goes out in the bush and picks some seeds to sell, is a picture of a 21st Century economy that I am not familiar with.
